A Closer Look At Redmi Note8 And Note8 Pro

The Redmi Note series has almost always been an easy recommendation for its best-in-class performance. The Redmi Note 8 enters a competitive landscape that has more than a few quality options available to buyers. Between the brand appeal of Samsung, clean software offered by Motorola, and growing threat of Realme’s focus on design and specifications, Xiaomi has taken big steps forward. Including a quad-camera setup and fast-charging should certainly help the Redmi Note 8 bridge the gap.

Redmi Note 8 Specifications

It is hard to fault the construction of Xiaomi devices, and the Redmi Note 8 is no exception. From the volume rocker and power button, to the SIM tray and USB-C port at the bottom, high-quality construction is apparent everywhere. The buttons are solid with no wobble and they offer near-perfect tactile feedback. The phone even has an IR blaster that you can use to control electronics like televisions and air conditioners.

Verdict

The Redmi Note 8 is a very good smartphone that falls just short of excellence. A lot of it has to do with the sheer amount of competition in the market. Now that consumers have umpteen options that deliver on features, hardware, and design, the Redmi Note 8 isn’t quite the standout device that the line-up stood once embodied.

That said, as long as you can live with the quirks of MIUI, the hardware is reliable and delivers all-day battery life, reasonably good performance, and a camera that is just as good as, if not better than, the competition.

Redmi Note 8 Pro

The Note 8 Pro adopts the new design styling of the 8 series, and pairs Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back with a polycarbonate frame. I actually like the plastic trim here, as it doesn’t feel cheap, helps keep costs down, and should provide slightly better impact resistance than metal. Regardless, the Note 8 Pro is pretty hefty at 200g.

What’s it like for gaming?

  • Media Tek Helio G90T
  • Mali-G76 GPU
  • LiquidCool vapor chamber

It’s great. The 12nm Helio G90T is really capable on the gaming front. Through various tests I’ve seen online, the Note 8 Pro slightly outperformed the Redmi K20, which runs the Snapdragon 730 mobile platform. MediaTek was going after the Snapdragon 730 with the G90T and from what I’ve seen it has succeeded.

Is the Note 8 Pro worth the money?

Absolutely. There’s nothing super revolutionary here, but for the price you pay, the package is pretty solid across the board. The quad-camera is a bit of a let-down, but is made up for by the reliable 64MP sensor. The Note 8 Pro has a good battery, decent screen, solid build quality, capable software (that, of course, won’t be to everyone’s liking), and excellent audio whether you’re wired or wireless.
