What is GitHub, Then?
GitHub is a website and cloud-based service that helps developers store and manage their code, as well as track and control changes to their code. GitHub can be divided into “Git” and “Hub”. The ‘Git” implies the version control system; a tool which allows developers to track their codes The “Hub” is the community of like-minded individuals who participate. It is all about the collaborative effort of the community.
What is Version Control?
Version Control is a system that records changes to a file or set of files over time so that you can recall specific versions later. Each user can make changes to an entire repository on their system. As a software project grows, version control becomes essential.
Version control lets developers safely work through branching and merging.
With branching, a developer duplicates part of the source code(repository). The developer can then safely make changes to the part of the code without affecting the rest of project.
Then, once the developer gets his/her part of the code working properly, He/she can merge that code back into the main source code to make it official .
